BOUND
In a departure from Taboo, MEUF is asking: What does it mean to be BOUND?
The word Bound is metamorphic, molded by surrounding syntax. Is it the who, the what, or the where that we are linked to?
Through the invisible and visible, we are never entirely independent. With our second issue, we seek to explore this unshakable connectedness to the world around us.
We will consider the spaces and relationships we create for ourselves and others: the sanctuaries we nurture, the boundaries we defend, and the liminal places we inhabit with others. We are cocooned by networks of interconnected strings, some which we use to knit ourselves together, and some which we choose to cut. Whether empirically or metaphysically, we want to interrogate what lies beneath the strings that we choose to ignore and forget.
We can all be bound by borders, restraints, or limits. But, being bound can mean so much more; we can be bound to be someone, to do something, and in this way we understand bound as a guarantee. We can be bounding and leaping, understanding bound as a verb. At some moments, we must all feel bound by obligation, by our own determination. We are bound by love. We are bound by all things, material and immaterial.
In the process of binding lies its antithesis; the unbound. Where there is binding there is a simultaneous unbinding, following as closely as shadow. We want to explore processes of making our own freedom, of liberation, and of severing.
Through works of writing and multimedia, MEUF is looking for contributors to explore physical geography and borderscapes, intimacy and connection, interpersonal bonds of love and resentment, and the relationships between obligation and sacrifice.
